On a superficial level I can understand what they mean - young Irish women writing about class through the people that do and do not have money - but unfortunately Cleopatra and Frankenstein lacked that charm, nerve and realness that Rooney's books have. Many people compare the author Coco Mellors with Sally Rooney. It led down too many separate tracks with details of little relevance to the general narrative. That's another point the book was just too long for the kind of story it wanted to deliver. None of the characters felt like real people to me either, despite how many hours I spent with me. ![]() A large part of the book is dialogue-based, but it felt performative rather than genuine to me - I kept thinking no one would say these things in real life. And in conclusion this book was really not for me. This book is such a darling of bookstagram, I felt I needed to check it out even though I had my doubts. ![]()
